WEBVTT 00:15.109 --> 00:17.331 Hey , Tom , I have a question for you . 00:18.229 --> 00:21.969 What does mean ? Hi Michelle . I have a 00:21.979 --> 00:25.770 question for you . What does the word 00:26.200 --> 00:30.170 mean ? I have no idea . I have no 00:30.180 --> 00:32.291 idea . I don't know what that means . 00:32.639 --> 00:34.861 You want to help him out , Angela , you 00:34.861 --> 00:38.580 get out . It's a good dunk . A what ? I 00:38.590 --> 00:40.646 have a question for you really quick 00:40.646 --> 00:44.259 question . What does the word mean ? 00:46.479 --> 00:49.509 Uh Dunk Beads , um like small 00:49.520 --> 00:52.080 neighborhood store . It's like a little 00:52.240 --> 00:54.369 shop where you can get , you know , 00:54.380 --> 00:57.599 razor blades and bread and stuff like 00:57.610 --> 01:00.790 that . He is a word that sailors used 01:00.799 --> 01:02.966 to basically refer to any sort of junk 01:02.966 --> 01:05.540 food . It was first used in 1927 in a 01:05.550 --> 01:07.494 comic strip referring to ice cream 01:07.494 --> 01:09.606 sundaes . So there you have it , your 01:09.606 --> 01:11.106 navy word for the day . He 01:21.889 --> 01:24.167 and welcome to another edition of joke , 01:24.167 --> 01:26.222 your Navy region in Hawaii's digital 01:26.222 --> 01:28.333 magazine . I'm Melvin Gonzalo and I'm 01:28.333 --> 01:30.167 Manny Gonzalez . We have several 01:30.167 --> 01:32.222 observances this month from national 01:32.222 --> 01:34.389 preparedness to fighting the battle to 01:34.389 --> 01:36.667 heal as well as remembering our heroes . 01:36.720 --> 01:38.720 More than 8000 service members were 01:38.730 --> 01:40.619 honored for their sacrifice since 01:40.619 --> 01:42.599 September 11th , 2001 Here's Simon 01:42.610 --> 01:44.777 apprentice Gavin Arnold Henshaw , with 01:44.777 --> 01:47.669 more service members and civilians 01:47.680 --> 01:49.847 participated in remembrance ceremonies 01:49.847 --> 01:51.902 on joint base , Pearl Harbor Hickham 01:51.902 --> 01:54.190 ceremonies were held on Fort Island and 01:54.199 --> 01:56.421 Pearl Harbor Memorial Fountain to honor 01:56.421 --> 01:58.599 lives lost since 9 11 . Let's take a 01:58.610 --> 02:02.239 look to me . This event is so 02:02.250 --> 02:04.819 important to show the families that we 02:04.830 --> 02:08.339 care to always honor those young ladies 02:08.350 --> 02:10.183 and gentlemen that died for this 02:10.183 --> 02:12.679 country that gave their leadership , 02:12.690 --> 02:16.419 their duty , respect , personal courage , 02:16.429 --> 02:18.318 honesty and integrity and for the 02:18.318 --> 02:20.651 service for this country . And we truly , 02:20.651 --> 02:22.762 truly appreciate that . And we always 02:22.762 --> 02:24.873 remember them . I'd like to thank all 02:24.873 --> 02:26.929 the volunteers that came out um this 02:26.929 --> 02:29.119 morning um to assist , they brought 02:29.130 --> 02:31.419 their hearts , they brought , they 02:31.429 --> 02:34.679 brought their stories and also they 02:34.690 --> 02:36.912 give them back to our community here in 02:36.912 --> 02:37.912 a while . 02:43.389 --> 02:45.630 It's comforting to see our community 02:45.639 --> 02:48.039 support our fallen service members . 02:48.050 --> 02:51.020 September also happens to be Prostate 02:51.029 --> 02:53.580 Cancer Awareness Month . We sat down 02:53.589 --> 02:55.970 with Mr Claude Crawford to talk about 02:55.979 --> 02:59.229 his fight . Here's Joanne Hao with more 03:00.009 --> 03:02.190 Claude Crawford . A navy veteran was 03:02.199 --> 03:04.979 recently diagnosed with prostate cancer . 03:05.149 --> 03:07.460 We spoke to him about his battle with 03:07.470 --> 03:10.130 what's known as the Quiet Disease and 03:10.139 --> 03:11.972 his mission to inform men to get 03:11.972 --> 03:14.380 screened early . Here's his story , 03:17.800 --> 03:21.729 a retired um navy veteran did 24 years 03:21.740 --> 03:25.220 in the navy . Uh 14 , 14 years in a 03:25.419 --> 03:29.210 mess . And then um right now 03:29.220 --> 03:32.300 presently , um I am the branch chief 03:32.309 --> 03:34.710 contract supervisor for DL a for 03:34.720 --> 03:38.699 contracting and I didn't really talk 03:38.710 --> 03:41.830 too much on it . But , uh , I went in 03:41.839 --> 03:45.570 for a basic physical exam 03:46.250 --> 03:48.679 and when I went into , for the physical , 03:48.690 --> 03:50.801 my doctor told me , he said , I'm not 03:50.801 --> 03:52.746 really , really worried about what 03:52.746 --> 03:54.690 you're here for . I'm very worried 03:54.690 --> 03:56.857 about what I see . And then I , I told 03:56.857 --> 03:59.079 him , I said , well , what do you see ? 03:59.679 --> 04:01.679 I got some news for you but I don't 04:01.679 --> 04:03.901 know if it's good news . He said , um , 04:03.901 --> 04:06.123 he was diagnosed with prostate cancer . 04:06.123 --> 04:08.830 And I'm like , man , this is some 04:08.839 --> 04:11.550 serious news . But , um , 04:12.860 --> 04:14.916 a lot of stuff happened in your mind 04:14.916 --> 04:17.138 when somebody tell you to see where you 04:17.138 --> 04:20.059 got cancer . So my thoughts on being 04:20.070 --> 04:22.014 diagnosed with prostate cancer , I 04:22.014 --> 04:24.690 didn't really understand everything 04:24.700 --> 04:27.089 about it and then I started researching 04:27.100 --> 04:29.322 a lot of things about it . I didn't , I 04:29.322 --> 04:31.211 didn't even know Doctor Kim , but 04:31.211 --> 04:34.709 doctor Kim is um , a known prostate 04:34.720 --> 04:38.399 cancer surgeon . Um , one of the top 04:38.829 --> 04:42.130 prostate um urologists in the United 04:42.140 --> 04:44.920 States . So many men are hesitant 04:45.269 --> 04:48.070 to get any kind of testing to see if 04:48.079 --> 04:50.720 there is a problem , but I highly 04:50.730 --> 04:53.459 encourage them to get tested because 04:54.510 --> 04:58.299 prostate cancer can be cured . Uh , and 04:58.309 --> 05:02.010 if we wait too long , sometimes they'll 05:02.019 --> 05:04.369 be metastasis . And then , you know , 05:04.380 --> 05:07.209 there's , they have a big problem in 05:07.220 --> 05:10.130 the future . But if we catch it early , 05:11.059 --> 05:13.970 we can do something for the person , we 05:13.980 --> 05:16.989 can cure the cancer . And change . What 05:17.000 --> 05:19.369 happened to them if they didn't get 05:19.380 --> 05:23.049 treated or screened up next . Let's see 05:23.059 --> 05:25.299 how Hawaii emergency managers are 05:25.309 --> 05:27.531 helping our local community prepare for 05:27.531 --> 05:29.670 natural disasters . Here's Wayne 05:29.679 --> 05:31.929 Randall to tell you more natural 05:31.940 --> 05:34.290 disasters can devastate a community at 05:34.299 --> 05:37.299 any moment . Earthquakes , hurricanes , 05:37.309 --> 05:40.070 wildfires such as the ones on Maui , 05:40.829 --> 05:42.996 the emergency managers from around the 05:42.996 --> 05:45.239 state are teaching FEMA courses to 05:45.250 --> 05:48.279 other agencies to help prepare them for 05:48.290 --> 05:50.750 future incidents . Let's find out more 05:50.790 --> 05:52.940 our , our first responders and our 05:52.950 --> 05:54.950 staff and our operation centers and 05:54.950 --> 05:57.172 they're putting their lives on the line 05:57.172 --> 05:59.228 when they respond to these disasters 05:59.228 --> 06:01.450 and they're doing that to save lives of 06:01.450 --> 06:03.561 our population . Um and to to protect 06:03.561 --> 06:05.783 property , to sustain mission assurance 06:05.783 --> 06:08.006 and to that incident under control . So 06:08.006 --> 06:09.950 it doesn't get worse . Those first 06:09.950 --> 06:12.117 responders , they deserve to be safe , 06:12.117 --> 06:12.045 they deserve to have a good plan . They 06:12.054 --> 06:14.165 deserve to have infrastructure around 06:14.165 --> 06:16.387 them , to protect them and support them 06:16.387 --> 06:18.554 while they do this important mission . 06:18.554 --> 06:18.355 And that's what these courses 06:18.364 --> 06:20.984 ultimately build . These courses are 06:20.994 --> 06:23.161 usually scheduled several months out , 06:23.161 --> 06:25.216 but we try to offer these courses at 06:25.216 --> 06:28.209 least 3 to 4 times here locally and we 06:28.220 --> 06:31.329 also offer them overseas in all 06:31.339 --> 06:34.429 locations throughout the Pacific . So 06:34.440 --> 06:37.049 we have these courses in Korea , Guam , 06:37.079 --> 06:40.799 Japan , where we have a major US 06:40.809 --> 06:43.420 Department of Defense presence , my 06:43.429 --> 06:46.519 predecessor and several other really 06:46.529 --> 06:48.473 just subject matter experts in the 06:48.473 --> 06:50.418 field of emergency management came 06:50.418 --> 06:52.859 together several years ago under and 06:52.869 --> 06:56.559 user to create a team of trained 06:56.570 --> 06:58.529 professionals to be able to be 06:58.540 --> 07:00.484 certified by FEMA to provide these 07:00.484 --> 07:02.651 trainings and then to work together to 07:02.651 --> 07:04.651 provide it across the services . So 07:04.651 --> 07:08.122 typically we will have Marines , Coast 07:08.132 --> 07:11.192 Guard , army Air Force and navy 07:11.203 --> 07:13.153 participants in both civilians and 07:13.162 --> 07:15.363 active duty . And we'll also have some 07:15.372 --> 07:17.261 volunteer organizations with some 07:17.261 --> 07:19.261 different volunteer representatives 07:19.261 --> 07:21.428 coming to learn about these courses as 07:21.428 --> 07:23.539 well .
