WEBVTT 00:00.790 --> 00:04.670 Ola . So M CS N Diaz , go on NCTFRH in 00:04.679 --> 00:07.340 Pearl Harbor , Hawaii , Ciento Gu Mo . 00:22.680 --> 00:24.847 Hello . Hi , welcome to Wai Momi . Our 00:24.847 --> 00:26.958 region's monthly lifestyle show where 00:26.958 --> 00:29.124 we bring you the stories , the history 00:29.124 --> 00:31.291 and the lifestyle of Pearl Harbor . We 00:31.291 --> 00:33.513 have a great show for you this month as 00:35.939 --> 00:37.995 De Espanol . As you can guess , it's 00:37.995 --> 00:39.939 National Hispanic Heritage Month . 00:39.939 --> 00:41.995 We'll be hosting part of the show in 00:41.995 --> 00:45.169 Spanish , Amos Esto Anoa de meas . 00:46.479 --> 00:48.590 Now let's get enough that a Ja Noa is 00:48.590 --> 00:50.701 doing an eternal tagging project . My 00:50.701 --> 00:52.868 name is Trevor Johansen . I'm a marine 00:52.868 --> 00:55.090 natural resources specialist and I work 00:55.090 --> 00:57.240 for Napfa Hawaii . A lot of my job 00:57.250 --> 00:59.450 entails like environmental reviews , 00:59.459 --> 01:02.409 making sure that construction follows 01:02.419 --> 01:05.870 BM P's best management practices um to 01:05.879 --> 01:08.046 mitigate any harm that could happen to 01:08.046 --> 01:10.046 the natural resources here in Pearl 01:10.046 --> 01:12.379 Harbor with this turtle tagging project . 01:12.379 --> 01:14.599 Um I work with Doctor Alexander Gaus 01:14.610 --> 01:18.330 who's leading the project . Um And we 01:18.760 --> 01:21.260 formed an Interagency agreement . So 01:21.269 --> 01:23.491 that's an agreement between two federal 01:23.491 --> 01:26.660 agencies . Um This was the , the start 01:26.669 --> 01:28.669 of the project and it was the first 01:28.669 --> 01:30.669 tagging that we were a part of that 01:30.669 --> 01:32.780 happened in February . And so they've 01:32.780 --> 01:34.836 been running for six or seven months 01:34.836 --> 01:38.360 now , um , that it took , um , 01:38.370 --> 01:41.769 six trips to the field with Alex and 01:41.779 --> 01:45.470 his team and they , um , kind of 01:45.480 --> 01:47.591 scouted around the harbor looking for 01:47.591 --> 01:50.319 turtles and then with their snorkel 01:50.330 --> 01:52.608 gear , you know , if they saw a turtle , 01:52.608 --> 01:54.830 they were able to jump in and grab it , 01:54.830 --> 01:57.052 bringing it in . And then we worked all 01:57.052 --> 01:59.274 the turtles here on the dock . Um , and 01:59.274 --> 02:01.519 that just meant tagging them with um 02:01.529 --> 02:04.290 metal tags on their flippers that are 02:04.300 --> 02:06.540 numbered and then um putting the 02:06.550 --> 02:09.979 satellite tags on as well . So once all 02:09.990 --> 02:13.820 the um tags stop deploying data , 02:13.899 --> 02:16.010 which should be maybe in about a year 02:16.010 --> 02:18.440 is their general life span for a tag . 02:18.690 --> 02:22.160 Um Then we can do like a , a final 02:22.169 --> 02:25.039 analysis of , of the home ranges like I 02:25.050 --> 02:27.490 mentioned for turtles and see how the 02:27.500 --> 02:29.722 turtles are using the harbor , which is 02:29.722 --> 02:32.770 really what we need to know because um 02:32.779 --> 02:35.320 as the dod Department of Defense , we 02:35.330 --> 02:37.899 are charged by Congress to manage our 02:37.910 --> 02:41.300 resources . Um And so part of that is 02:41.309 --> 02:43.198 under standing , you know how the 02:43.198 --> 02:45.695 turtles are using Pearl Harbor so that 02:45.705 --> 02:47.826 hopefully we can try to mitigate any 02:47.835 --> 02:49.946 negative impacts that we're having on 02:49.946 --> 02:52.466 the green sea turtles here . They found 02:52.475 --> 02:55.266 some really interesting findings so far 02:55.276 --> 02:57.345 where two of those turtles that were 02:57.356 --> 02:59.546 tagged have actually left the harbor 02:59.555 --> 03:02.026 and one is traveling around the 03:02.035 --> 03:04.651 Hawaiian Islands . It went straight 03:04.662 --> 03:07.082 from Pearl Harbor to Molokai and Koala 03:07.792 --> 03:09.848 and then it went all the way over to 03:09.848 --> 03:12.014 Kauai and is currently swimming around 03:12.014 --> 03:14.236 Niki . How so that's really interesting 03:14.236 --> 03:16.348 to see , you know , the , the turtles 03:16.348 --> 03:18.459 here and um where they're moving . Um 03:18.459 --> 03:20.070 If you're interested in more 03:20.070 --> 03:22.236 information , you can go to the Noah's 03:22.236 --> 03:24.459 fishery website . They do a really good 03:24.459 --> 03:23.861 job of sharing all the really great 03:23.871 --> 03:25.427 science that they do here . 03:28.199 --> 03:31.100 La Noaa Lo Grande Vans in Suu studios 03:31.119 --> 03:33.850 in la de La Suas in Pearl Harbor . 03:33.889 --> 03:36.520 Translation , Noah is making great 03:36.529 --> 03:38.419 progress in their study of turtle 03:38.429 --> 03:40.596 movement in Pearl Harbor . And now for 03:40.596 --> 03:42.762 some fire safety tips to keep everyone 03:42.762 --> 03:43.762 safe at home . 04:11.690 --> 04:14.210 A lava conta Pearl Harbor . So Dov 04:14.500 --> 04:17.140 separ naval Station , Pearl Harbor Air 04:17.170 --> 04:19.470 Force Base before 2010 joint base , 04:19.480 --> 04:21.813 Pearl Harbor HIC was two separate bases , 04:21.813 --> 04:23.869 naval station , Pearl Harbor and HCC 04:23.899 --> 04:24.899 Air Force Base . 04:32.739 --> 04:34.961 We wanted to know if sailors and airmen 04:34.961 --> 04:37.128 knew about the base or each other .
