CNRH Wounded Warrior Program to Host First Adaptive Sports Demonstrations

23 September 2025

From Kyler Hood, Navy Region Hawaii Public Affairs

Service members, DoD employees and their families have a unique opportunity, Sept. 23-26, to experience the same adaptive sports of Wounded Warriors who train and compete on their journey to the DoD Warrior Games.

Navy Wounded Warrior is hosting its first-ever adaptive sports expo for Navy Region Hawaii along with a resource fair and guest speaker at various locations on Joint Base Pearl Harbor – Hickam (JBPHH).

The Wounded Warrior Games is an annual adaptive sports competition for wounded, ill, and injured service members and veterans from all branches of the U.S. military to enhance their recovery and rehabilitation and foster a sense of community and inspiration.

“The intent of the expo is to bring awareness to the DoD Warrior Games and expose both the recovering service members within Navy wounded warrior and the community to what the DoD Warrior Games is all about,” said Jacob Murphy, the Navy Wound Warrior adaptive reconditioning and community outreach specialist.

The resource fair takes place Sept. 23, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the JBPHH Fitness Center. Navy Wounded Warriors will have 40 vendors scheduled for active-duty service members and their families. The information and materials provided can active-duty members suffering from a serious illness or injury who face a medical discharge make a smoother transition to life outside the military.

“I just want to make sure service members know what we do, where we are and how they can get our help,” Murphy explained. “We have an open enrollment board every week for the Navy Wounded Warrior program, so we do an assessment and the board determines if a Sailor is going to be enrolled or not. However, even if they're not enrolled, we still make sure they know what resources are available.”

At 2 p.m. on Sept. 23, guest speaker, Maria Edwards, a cancer survivor, and last year’s Navy Safe Harbor Foundation’s Wounded Warrior of the Year will share her experience as a participant in the Navy Wounded Warrior program and give an overview of its offerings, highlighting how it optimizes the success of the enrolled wounded warriors’ recovery, rehabilitation, and reintegration activities.
