In accordance with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s Lead and Copper Rule, the Navy is providing our water consumers with a comprehensive inventory of drinking water service line materials. As of October 2024, none are known to be lead service lines. If lead service lines are identified through further investigation, the Navy is committed to the replacement of those lines in accordance with the Lead and Copper Rule.
While the drinking water supplied to you meets all federal and state standards for lead, it's important to note that the Navy’s infrastructure dates back even before World War I. As a result, your building or residence may be served by a Lead Service Line (LSL) due to previous regulations. Up until January 1, 2014, "lead-free" plumbing components were permitted to contain up to 8% lead, which may be more apparent in older areas.
The Navy is dedicated to protecting public health and will be reaching out to residents and building managers for service lines that were identified as Galvanized Requiring Replacement (GRR) and unknown pipe material. If you do not know what location the building or residence belongs to, contact the PPV Housing manager or the building manager to confirm.
Service Line Materials:
Each service line, or portion of the service line where ownership is split, is categorized in the following manner:
-
“Lead” where the service line is made of lead.
-
“Galvanized Requiring Replacement (GRR)” where a galvanized service line is or was at any time downstream of a lead service line or is currently downstream of a “Lead Status Unknown” service line. It must presume there was an upstream lead service line if the water system is unable to demonstrate that the galvanized service line was never downstream of a lead service line,
-
“Non-lead” where the service line is determined through evidence not to be lead or galvanized requiring replacement.
-
“Unknown” (or “Lead Status Unknown”) where the service line material is not known to be lead, galvanized requiring replacement, or a non-lead service line, such as where there is no documented evidence supporting material classification.
